Reported Fossil Fuel Spills in Vermont in 2019

While the worst spills – Exxon Valdez, BP Deepwater Horizon, the list goes on – rightly get the most attention, the fact is fossil fuel spills happen every day in Vermont and hardly get a mention. There have been more than 18,000 oil spills since Vermont started monitoring them in the 1970s.

In 2019, over 250 reported events, at least 5,800 gallons of gasoline, diesel, heating oil and motor oil spilled onto Vermont’s land and into its waters. There were spills in every county and, no doubt, many spills went unreported.
